Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill
All Anchorage School District schools and departments are signed up to participate in the 2017 Great Alaska Shakeout at 10:19 a.m. on Oct. 19. The Great Alaska Shakeout is inclusive of two important drills. The first is for all staff and students to perform a duck-cover-hold drill as an initial response to an earthquake. The second action is to conduct an orderly building evacuation and accountability drill. Within the evacuation, principals activate and rehearse school-based Incident Command Teams as well as search, medical and communication teams.
More information is available on the Great Alaska Shakeout website. There you will find resources to use before, during, and after this statewide drill.
In advance of the Great ShakeOut, AAA is offering schools free resources to help prepare young people and their families for a disaster through its Road to Ready: A Disaster Preparedness Lesson Plan for Schools. This free lesson plan guides students through all the steps to being prepared with fun, engaging, and educational resources - including materials they can take home to prepare their families.
