Master Artist Series |
For adults.
Two-week classes taught by Alaska Native Master artists from around the state. Each class is available for two optional graduate-level credits for an additional fee (payable to UAA) of $89. These classes are supported in part by a generous grant from ExxonMobil. |

Athabascan rifle case or canvas boot sewing with Charlie Pardue
January 2009 |
Participants sew and bead traditional fringed rifle cases from moose hide as they learn the history of beading, practical uses, and cultural context of this rare art form.
Prerequisite: beading class offered by Helen Koenig, described in the Cultural Saturday Classes section

Sugpiaq/Alutiiq War Shield and Spear with Andrew Abyo
February 2009 |
To be held off-campus. Participants carve a war shield and spear, based on ancient designs as they learn about traditional Sugpiaq practices and social relations with friends and enemies.

Mask Carving with Marvin Wheeler
February 2009 |
Cultural preference of participants and taught at APIA. Inupiaq artist Marvin Wheeler, who has lived in Southeast Alaska for many years, is a master in mask carving from many of Alaska’s Native cultures. He will teach the design, techniques, and cultural history of the masks chosen by participants.

Haida Cedar Bark Weaving with Diane Willard
March 2009 |
Participants will learn the preparation of cedar bark and will weave projects of their choice (baskets, hats, mats). Open to all levels of weavers.

Cultural Saturday Classes |
For age 14 to adult.
Each class consists of three or four sessions on successive Saturdays. Serious art students should plan to attend all class sessions. Admission is free except for the cost of supplies. Pre-registration is required. These classes are offered through generous grants from The CIRI Foundation and BP. |

How to register
Call the Heritage Center’s scheduler at 330-8000 to register and pay with a credit card. Optional graduate level credit is also available through the Anchorage School District’s web site www.mylearningplan.org, but teachers must also call ANHC and pay the materials and instructor fee in order to secure a place in the class. Places will be held only with the receipt of payment in full.
Refunds
- Full refund if withdrawal is three weeks or more prior to the start of the class.
- 50% refund if withdrawal is between one and three weeks prior to start of class.
- No refund if withdrawal is one week or less prior to start of class.
Note: ANHC will not be able to offer activities or care for children while their parents or older siblings attend art classes. Please make arrangements for their care. |
