2009 summer program successes
Summer Enrichment | Walk & Write | Transitions Adventure

Summer enrichment programSummer Enrichment Program

Our Summer Enrichment Program was very successful this year. We served 150 students in grades 1–8. We also had seven high school interns who helped with the program. Students attended classes in: reading, writing, math, music, P.E., arts and crafts and Alaska Native languages (Yup’ik, Tlinget, and Unangax) for five weeks. Our new class this year was music where students learned about Alaska Native music, were able to use iPods and Garageband and also learned two Alaska Native songs and dances.

Our Summer Enrichment Program was in very high demand - we had a waitlist of over 150 students this year. We are planning on adjusting our program starting next year so we can serve a larger number of students.

Walk & Write Program

The Walk & Write Program served middle school and high school students. Our goal was to bring students into the outdoors, learn more about Alaska wilderness, and boost writing skills. We were able to hike in various locations in the Anchorage area, such as the Johnson Trail, Arctic Valley, Byron Glacier and all students were able to participate in a raft float on Portage Creek!

Transitions Adventure

In July of 2009, 10 boys embarked on a 2-week Transitions Adventure, a special summer program piloted this year for Project Ki’L. The program was designed to prepare boys for kindergarten through fun and engaging approaches to literacy, numeracy and science. On July 31, a special graduation barbeque was held for families to recognize the learning milestones achieved by the boys as they enter kindergarten this year.
