Physical Therapy
Safe lifting for your student
Each student has a special way to be transferred to/from his/her wheelchair. A physical therapist can help find the safest method of transferring a student and help train staff in safe lifting practices. However, there are common safe practices for all lifting. They include the following steps:
- Plan your lift. Talk out loud. Count “One, two three.”
- You need a wide base of support and good shoes.
- Bend your knees. Lift with your legs.
- Keep your back in neutral position and do not twist your back as you turn. Move your feet instead of twisting your back.
- Keep the student (or whatever you’re lifting) close to your body.
- Exhale as you lift to keep from holding your breath. You can hiss like a snake or count out loud.
