What is Action Research?

ASD's 2008-09 Action Research projects »

Action research is a "catchall" label for research done by teachers, administrators, and other on-site educators which is less formal in nature (i.e., very applied in nature)

The purpose is to solve local problems & develop reflective practice with a focus on development, implementation of new product, plan, or procedure (not on generalizability)

Action Research

Steps in the process

Identify a problem or need
Collect information and resources
Prepare objectives, activities, procedures
Implement the project
Monitor the procedures, participant reactions, etc.
Identify strengths & weaknesses of the project
Revise project by focusing on the identified weaknesses
Assess on-going & long-term results of the project
