Media coverage corrections

Anchorage Daily News

On January 8, 2007, the Anchorage Daily News ran a Compass article from a community member — "School District doesn't seem ready for any leap forward". The article included speculations on the credibility of the Anchorage School District that were misleading and incorrect.

Budget Review Team

The writer implied the district was uncooperative and withheld information from the budget review team.  In fact, this team met twice as often as any other team and delved into the details of the proposed Student Information System at the committee’s request.

Though tasked with reviewing the budget, the committee also scrutinized management decisions and processes.  ASD staff used the group’s technical expertise to review and rethink practices.  In the end, some practices remained the same, a fact that some committee members regret because their particular agendas didn't advance.

SIS costing

Extensive research and planning went into the decision to solicit proposals for a system to assist parents, teachers and staff to manage student data.  The estimated cost of the system was presented verbally.  The public procurement process would have been compromised by the distribution of written cost estimates.

Purchasing a ready-made system was selected over “open source” development; proven flexible information systems can be easily modified to fit most unique needs saving time and money over new development.

Bond funding

ASD Response

Voter and taxpayer concerns influenced the district decision to avoid bonding and local bonds for technology have failed in the past. Construction needs are the priority for bonds.  We are confident the outcome will be a successful system that improves staff and parent communication and benefits student achievement.
