International applicants

  • Legal Eligibility to Work in the United States: International applicants who indicate on their application that they are not a US citizen, but also confirm that they are legally eligible to be employed in the US, will be asked to indicate how they have obtained eligibility (i.e. student visa, etc.).
  • The ASD currently only sponsors H1B visas for international applicants in “high need” areas. Currently those areas are:
    • World Immersion Language (requires native speaking language ability) teachers:
      • Japanese
      • Russian
      • Spanish
      • German
    • Chinese Language (FLES)
    • Special Education
    • Related Services
      • School Psychologist
  • More information about federal immigration laws can be found by going to the federal Web site at www.ice.gov/

State of Alaska Certificate Issues:

  • All certificated teacher applicants must be able to secure a valid Alaska Teaching certificate.
  • As part of our application review process the ASD HR team attempts to determine whether a candidate is likely to become Alaska certificated, prior to scheduling a screening interview.
  • The state department of Education and Early Development (DEED) requires certificate applicants who had their educational teacher preparation completed outside the US to be evaluated through a transcript evaluation service.
  • Since the educational background of our international teacher applicants varies greatly it may be necessary for the applicant to secure an actual AK Teaching certificate, prior to applying with the ASD.
  • More information can be found about certificate needs by going to the DEED Web site at www.eed.state.ak.us/TeacherCertification/
