Substitute Teaching Information

The Anchorage School District provides a quality education for all students every day of school whether the classroom teacher is present or a "Guest Teacher" (substitute teacher) is teaching the students. We welcome your employment application for this critical position!

Substitute Bonus Incentive

ASD will issue a $300 bonus to any:

  • substitute teacher who works more than 100 days during the 2009-10 school year.

  • substitute teacher who works more than 40 days at Mt. Iliamna, Whaley, Nunaka, Northwood ABC, Wonderpark, Airport Heights, Tyson or Wendler during the 2009-10 school year. (The Bonus is for days worked at any one of the individual sites. Workdays cannot be combined from the eight sites; i.e., 12 days @ Whaley and 36 @ Nunaka to receive the bonus.)

  • substitute nurse that works more than 40 days at any school in the district during the 2009-10 school year.

  • substitute special education TA that works more than 40 days at Mt. Iliamna or Whaley during the 2009-10 school year. (The Bonus is for days worked  at any one of the individual sites. Workdays cannot be combined from the two sites; i.e., 12 days @ Whaley and 36 @ Mt Iliamna to receive the bonus.)
Answers to frequently asked questions about the bonus
  • The bonus will be based on sub dispatch processed jobs ONLY, with a confirmation check against ASD Payroll records to ensure the dispatched job was actually worked.
  • The bonus will be issued during the middle of the month following the end of 2009-10 school year.
  • Yes, it is possible for a teacher substitute to work 40+ days at Whaley, 40+ days at Nunaka and 40+ days at Mt. Iliamna and receive four $300 bonuses!

Automatic registration for substitutes who worked in 2008-09

For the 2009-10 school year, substitutes who are interested in continuing with their employment will not need to pre-register.  If you have worked five days during the school year you will automatically be registered.  We will be sending you an informational packet in August indicating changes in the system. If you are currently on judicial probation you will not be considered for a substitute position.

Current issues for substitutes

  • Bonus – The 2009-10 bonus will be paid out in June 2010.
  • Student Interns – Please submit official transcripts or clear copies of your official transcripts with your bachelors posted to Human Resources Department by August 2009.  You may upload your transcripts to your application in Applitrack.
  • PE, Art, & Music – These jobs may be itinerant. This means you will travel to multiple sites during the course of the day. Please read/listen carefully to ‘special instructions’ for jobs of this type.  If you cannot or are not willing to travel please cancel out of the job.
  • Canceling a job – If you must cancel a job right before the start of the job, please call the school and let them know you are canceling.
  • Illness – If you know you are not feeling well, please do not accept a job. This creates a problem for the school if you need to leave halfway through the job.
  • Military Base Access Passes – must be carried at all times and are available at:
      • Boniface Visitors Control Center (Boniface Gate) at 3711 Vandenberg Ave, Elemendorf AFB
      • Base Access at 8517 20th Street Room 110, Elmendorf AFB, 99501
    • Long Term; valid for longer than 3 months may be obtained at either location, Monday – Friday from 7:30 am -3:30 pm.  
    • Short Term; valid for less than 3 months may be obtained only at the Boniface Visitors Control Center Boniface Gate) location, Monday – Sunday from 6 am - 8 pm.  

Substitute Teacher Training

ASD provides several resources to substitute teachers. There will be Substitute Teacher Training offered to those who are new to subbing and/or new to the ASD. Many of the Web sites listed here contain resources that can be downloaded for use in the classroom. Two substitute teacher trainings are provided and are available to all substitutes: SubInstructor eTraining CD with on-line assessment, and face-to-face Classroom Management Training. All new substitutes are required to take the SubInstructor eTraining CD with on-line assessment. Those who have one year or less of their own classroom teaching experience are required to take the face-to-face Classroom Management training. Registration for both of these trainings is through Training and Professional Development Department at 907-742-3846.

What is Substitute Teacher Training?
Sub training consists of two separate trainings:

Computer-based

  • Sub Instructor e-Training CD plus on-line assessment is required of all new substitute teachers. It takes a minimum of 2 hours to complete. This will be available beginning August 4, 2009.

Face-to-Face

  • A classroom management course is required of substitutes who have only one year or less of their own classroom teaching experience. This training is a full-day session, which focuses on classroom management and safety. The schedule for the classes is below - please make your reservation as soon as possible as they fill up very quickly:
    • August 18 and 27, 2009
    • September 3 and 22, 2009
    • October 10, 16 and 29, 2009
    • November 17, 2009
    • December 3, 2009
    • January 12 and 22, 2010
    • February 9, 2010
    • March 25, 2010
