Check out the new Parent/Student Resources! also teachers take a look at Anchorage School District Music Department From Kindergarten to Grade 6, all students attend Elementary Classroom Music, where they learn fundamental music concepts and apply this knowledge in many activities - listening, performing and creating. Many elementary schools also have extracurricular performing groups, such as choir or recorder ensemble. In 6th grade, students are offered their first elective class: either band or orchestra. 6th Grade Band & Orchestra introduce students to traditional instrumental groups and prepare them for continued study at the middle school level. In addition to band and orchestra, Middle School Music offers choir classes. Several courses are generally offered in each discipline, organized by ability level and style of music, such as “Intermediate Orchestra” and “Jazz Band.” The High School Music program is very much like that of middle school, offering courses at varying levels in band, choir, and orchestra. Some schools have additional music classes, such as guitar and keyboard. Many extracurricular opportunities are available to ASD music students through Festivals & Honor Groups. These include solo & ensemble festivals as well as local and regional honor groups which require an audition. |
