| In the 2001-2002
school year Chris Wilson, Vice President of Subway
of Alaska, formed a partnership with Bowman Elementary,
where I was the assistant principal. Subway had helped
the district in the past. The inspiration was to focus
on one school and make a difference in a whole school
program. We combined our efforts to promote the Forty
Developmental Assets Model and began the partnership.
I brought the partnership with me to Abbott Loop Elementary
in August 2002. We refined and renewed the partnership
in 2003 and again this year. Our partnership involves
the following: |
- Subway provides Abbott Loop students with product
coupon incentives for the school wide reading program
(given at every 2000 pages read).
- Subway provides one Abbott Loop classroom with
a six-foot sandwich once a month for reading-log
accomplishments.
- Subway provides six Abbott Loop students once
a month with a Subway lunch with the principal at
Subway Lake Otis (for Caught-Being-Good students).
- Subway provides a certificate plus “Fresh
Value Meal Coupons” and a Subway medallion
for seven students per month, one per grade level—citizens
of the month.
- Subway provides principal with discretionary coupons
for staff morale builders.
- Subway provides free tickets to a Seawolf Hockey
game to promote the school/business partnership and
celebrate student successes.
|
- Subway managers and marketing directors will give
Jr. Achievement presentations.
- Abbott Loop Elementary displays the Subway Logo/”Abbott
Loop Elementary School Business Partner” in
school newsletters, PTA events, and Subway sponsored
certificates (citizen of the month).
- Abbott Loop Elementary agrees to make Subway of
Alaska the sole food-product provider and partner
for student incentives.

Subway’s
impact on Abbott Loop has been phenomenal. The school
climate is at an all-time high. Discipline referrals
were cut in half for each of the past two years.
Thank you Subway of Alaska!

Parents and community members are recognizing the
positive contributions that Subway has made for Abbott Loop Elementary. |
