The partnership between Northrim Bank and Fairview Elementary School has had a happy and healthy history for the past 5 years. Even before the start of the school year, Northrim volunteers met to discuss ways to partner with Fairview. Northrim was there for our Back-to-School Open House, providing support to students, staff, and families. Northrim provided volunteers to cook and serve food during the Back-to-school night and donated beverages for the evening.

Northrim provides volunteer readers and listeners throughout the school year and people, products, and prizes for our quarterly family literacy nights. When we need someone to flip burgers, Northrim is there. During student council elections, Northrim volunteers collected and counted ballots. In fact, whenever we call, Northrim is there for us.

In addition to their volunteer efforts, Northrim provided funds for this year’s Battle of the Books, including the purchase of shirts for the participants and the iron-on letters for student names. Northrim has also given a truly valuable gift. To support our school-wide positive discipline and recognition program, each academic quarter Northrim provides citizenship and academic achievement awards. Each of the 23 classroom teachers recognizes 5-7 students every quarter for outstanding citizenship or academic achievement, and Northrim creates and prints the certificates, which are presented at our quarterly, school-wide awards assemblies. You don’t have to be a math expert to add up the hours, materials, and supplies donated to this massive effort. As if this wasn't enough, each classroom teacher selects a citizen- of the month, every month, who gets to select a book of their choice from the recreational reading library, also provided by Northrim. Positive behavior is up, discipline referrals are down, and parents, family, and friends come to school to see the children receive recognition and positive feedback for making good choices.

The effect of this relationship is truly staggering. Watching the care and pride felt by our volunteer readers as they read and watch the faces of the students. Seeing the smiles on the faces of students, staff, and families as names are called and watching happy children accept their certificates in front on their peers and parents. I especially love the joy in the voices of parents who got a call from the principal, not because their child was in trouble, but because their child is a student leader.

It takes a village to raise a child. Northrim is a vital part of the Fairview village and the Fairview/Northrim partnership has mutually benefited the employees of Northrim Bank and the Fairview community.
