  Kaladi Brothers Coffee Co.

Gruening Middle School

Kaladi Bros. Coffee Co. has been a wonderful business partner with Gruening Middle School for the past 8 years. They begin our partnership by offering the Colt Café (our student run business) free coffee beans for our café. They then continued to help out by offering to sell and deliver all our syrups, cups and lids at wholesale cost. This saved the Colt Café valuable time and money as we need these supplies on a weekly basis.

The original Colt Café program was inspired by Lori Miller, Business Ed. and SBP teacher at Gruening to enable students to gain real life work experience. Approximately 25 students perform all the duties of ordering supplies, stocking shelves, preparing espresso drinks and cleaning the café. Kaladi has also provided barrista training for Colt Café members, provided us with training videos and materials for in-class training and offered free scholarships to Colt Café students to attend their 2 day training at their downtown store.

Kaladi additional has provided a tour of their company for Colt Café students. All Colt Café students look forward to this trip as they get to see the complete coffee operation at Kaladi. This field trip is topped off with free Italian sodas for all the students compliments of Kaladi Bros.

By having Kaladi Bros. as a school business partner with Gruening, we have been able to provide training for our students, excellent barristas for our customers (the Gruening staff and students), and excellent coffee products for everyone. Our Colt Café students have gained valuable job experience and excellent resources to list on their resumes for the future.

Polaris K-12 School

The 2004-2005 school year marks the third year of the Polaris K 12 School Business Partnership with Kaladi Brothers Coffee Co. The inspiration behind this partnership has a lot to do with physical location. Polaris K-12 School is located just two blocks from the Kaladi Brothers main store on Brayton Drive. Mark Lyke (Polaris teacher) approached Tim Gravel (Kaladi Brothers employee) with an idea of a partnership between Kaladi Brothers and Polaris DECA. From that beginning, Kaladi Brothers was supportive of DECA and that partnership quickly grew to incorporate the whole school. Perhaps the greatest characteristic of the partnership is the continued support and willingness to give on the part of Kaladi Brothers to the Polaris community. Polaris is very fortunate for such a supportive partnership.

During the three years that Kaladi Brothers has been our school business partner, they have supported DECA and Polaris in the following ways:

  • Provided Polaris DECA with a coffee machine valued at over $2,000. They are providing the maintenance and training free to our program.
  • Providing supplies for our program at a basic cost or at their price.
  • Provided seminar topics and discussions for the DECA staff.
  • Donating for fund-raising projects like school carnival, DECA Nationals, principal's scholarship program and incentive awards.
  • Rearranging their business schedules to provide services to DECA at both the local and state level, (e.g. interviews,
providing jugs of coffee and supplies, donating requested supplies and gifts).
  • Joined the national DECA program as a business sponsor to our program.
  • Assigned one staff member to work directly with us to try and expediently help provide service to us.

They are working with us to develop a school-to-work project that will allow students in the Polaris DECA program to seek employment under a mentorship that would allow them to continue with the objectives of the DECA program while earning wages.
