The inspiration
for this partnership between Mr. Mike Bradner, dba
Alaska Information and Research Services and Hanshew
Middle School, grew from the fact that Mr. Bradner
is in the journalism business and his wife is the driving
force behind the Hanshew student newspaper and the
school yearbook.
The school and business collaborated to prepare and
proof the school newspaper; to help with computer/software
applications that were common to the newspaper and
yearbook production; and deliver supplies and materials
that were necessary to produce the school newspaper
and yearbook. Mr. Bradner donated many of the needed
materials. |
Jeanne Bradner, teacher,
Hanshew Middle School
I'm in my 26th year of teaching
and Mike has always been involved, helpful, and on-call.
He has driven on field trips when I didn't
have enough drivers, helped purchase supplies when
I didn't have enough materials, and helped deliver
that necessary “item” that I had forgotten
at home. It's no surprise that he was willing
and ready to come to my rescue when it came to helping
out with the school newspaper and the yearbook.
Mike's background in the newspaper
and publishing field has been invaluable. He purchased
the software program I use to create the Hanshew Hawk
newspaper as well as the e-mac I needed when my school-supplied
computer couldn’t handle my newspaper and yearbook
needs. Mike has also donated paper and often volunteered
to pick up or deliver the paper when I still had it
printed at the King Career Center. He has also often
spoken to my journalism kids about his experiences
in the field and about how to put together a story.
In short, Mike has always been a strong supporter
of education in general, of my needs as a teacher,
and of the needs of “my” kids. |

Mr. Bradner
comes from a family of writers. His grandmother wrote
a book and his brother helps him with his writing business.
He started out writing for the Fairbanks Daily News
Miner and also wrote for the Alaska Oil Construction
Report. He currently publishes the Alaska Economic
Report and the Alaska Legislative Digest. He has
about 40 years of writing experience and served in
the Legislature for 10 years.
In my interview with
Mr. Bradner, he said, “one rule of journalism
is to keep it simple.” He told me that if you
are writing about people you “always have to
spell their name correctly.” He also said “you
should never do the final edit of your own material.”
Mr.
Bradner has helped the Hawk’s Eye staff by helping
proof our paper, buying paper and helping run off the
paper. He bought Mrs. Bradner a special chair, the
computer, and the program she uses to put the paper
together. He’s even driven on journalism
field trips! |
