Channel 2, KTUU, has been a mentoring program for On the Job Training Students from the Martin Luther King Jr., Career Center for over 20 years. They have been involved with training and job shadowing over 70 of our student interns from our Radio and Television Production program over that time period.

KTUU allows our students access to all departments and hands-on experience. We have had students in many different departments with the chance to work with some of the best mentors in the television field. This enables the students to decide, first hand, if their choice of this profession is the one that they would like to pursue after graduation from high school.

Dean Vogt, OJT Coordinator

The people at KTUU Channel 2 give our students the opportunity to experience what it is like to produce a news show and run a television station. The staff allows our students to work any of the shifts that they are able, in order to accommodate their busy schedules.

Running a news program involves a lot of stress, timing and expertise. It is not an easy job to do your job as a professional and still find the time to be a mentor, to be patient, answer questions and allow growth in our students. Somehow the professionals at KTUU pull this off and do it in such a manner that our students learn a lot and grow in their chosen career field.

I would like to thank Trent McNelly, Operations Manager and Gavin Reed, Assistant Operations Manager for coordinating placement of our students and allowing us to continue our association with KTUU. I would also like to thank Vern Irvine, Morning News Director, and Rick Schleyer, Evening News Director, for finding wonderful mentors for our students. Mr. Irvine has even developed an educational curriculum to make sure that our students have a chance to learn every aspect of the television news business. Without their help, direction and experience the students would not have the valuable experiences that help them to develop their skills. We would also like to thank each and every person who works at KTUU for having the patience and kindness in dealing with and teaching our students.

Matt Hessler, OJT student

The folks at Channel 2 are really great people. They are always willing to answer questions and have told me to never be afraid to ask questions because I am there to learn. They are extremely patient with me and have congratulated me for getting better at tasks and continue to add to my responsibilities. They want to make sure that I get trained in as many positions as possible and provide those opportunities to me. It’s a very comfortable environment to work in. Everyone is very professional yet laid back and friendly. They treat me like a regular employee and have high expectations for me but still understand that I am still learning new tasks every day.
