Blockbuster Video has been a business partner with Central Middle School for almost ten years, impacting many students and staff with their donations and presence at school. They have assisted in the classroom and throughout the school with several special projects.
Each semester, Blockbuster management trains students prior to their mock job interviews. Students especially enjoy the “Bad Interview/Good Interview” lesson, when the store manager visits the classroom and simulates a Blockbuster interview with Janna Walker, the SBP class teacher. Students leap at the chance to critique their teacher’s performance, and are always astonished when she arrives late, dressed as a sloppy teenager who smacks her gum, slouches, badmouths previous employers, and uses slang. They are equally amazed to hear Blockbuster manager Craig Cobb’s stories from actual job interviews, especially when he tells about the person who fell asleep during questioning! This classroom visit from a real-world manager is a great way to teach students how to put their best foot forward in the working world. The mock job interviews are instrumental in preparing students for real jobs, and the end result is beneficial students and employers alike.
Central students can always count on Blockbuster Video to help with its annual fundraisers. Each year, the students hold a “Pennies for the Penniless” campaign to benefit Kids’ Kitchen, and Blockbuster places collection canisters on counters in all of its stores. When the SBP class sponsors a dance each fall, Blockbuster employee Danielle Shones volunteers to go “shopping” in their candy warehouse and donates products to Central for resale. These creative fundraising techniques make a real difference at the school.
If a Central teacher decides to use a video in the classroom for educational purposes, Blockbuster gives them free rental coupons. Teachers are impressed with the company’s generosity.
In addition to the assistance given to Central, Blockbuster also went the extra mile for the School Business Partnership program as a whole by sponsoring a fundraising drive in their stores. They raised over $2000 to benefit the program!
Blockbuster is a committed and cooperative business partner, and the entire Central community as well as the Anchorage School Business Partnership program is grateful for their support! |
