NECA/IBEW has formal partnerships with two lucky ASD schools. They have a longstanding relationship with Denali Montessori, and recently added Wendler Middle School to its family. This is especially ambitious, considering that NECA/IBEW is an active business partner that is involved with nearly every aspect of its schools. NECA/IBEW’s influence can be seen from the classroom to staff lounge, from open houses to goodbye picnics, and from curricular needs to special projects.
Denali staff members are working hard to improve student reading skills, and NECA/IBEW is doing what it can to help. They awarded $500 in scholarship money so more families can attend an afterschool tutoring program, and helped fund the Reading is Fundamental program. Every child at Denali received three free books this year, an amazing gift. NECA/IBEW also sponsored this year’s Iditaread program, a fun reading promotion program that is especially relevant at a school where the Iditarod runs past the front door!
NECA/IBEW enhances other curricular areas as well. They funded this year’s peer mediator training, presented information about electrical safety to intermediate classrooms, participated in the school’s math night, and sponsored an energy project for IGNITE students. They also support the Child in Transition Program to provide backpacks and school supplies so that children in need have the materials they need to succeed in school.
Clearly NECA/IBEW enjoys giving back to the community – so much that they decided to form a partnership with a second school!
In a few short years, NECA/IBEW has become an important part of the Wendler community. They brought the spirit of service they exemplify at Denali to Wendler. NECA/IBEW sponsors the Salmon on Parade art program, RAM Camp (a school camp that helps incoming seventh grade students prepare for middle school), field trips, student breakfasts, the eighth-grade celebration ceremony, and fundraisers. They donated food and gift boxes to needy families during the holidays. They are planning to sponsor a field trip so students can tour their electrical apprenticeship school. NECA/IBEW employees have also volunteered to give presentations to students about electrical occupations.
Both Denali and Wendler employees rave about their partnerships with NECA/IBEW. Wendler SBP coordinator Lori Garreau says, “Their monetary donations are wonderful, but their willingness to donate their time to events is even more important to students’ education. The support of the staff by NECA/IBEW also has a direct impact on the students receiving the best education they can.” Brooke Hull, Denali’s principal, echoes that sentiment: “There is a wonderful openness to our school business partnership with NECA/IBEW. They keep their ears open to new needs they can address at our school. Once NECA/IBEW is aware of a need, they are so eager to help.”
