Big Wild Life Trivia Contest
ACVB works with the eighth grade SBP class at Central Middle School to put on the annual district-wide Big Wild Life Trivia Contest. Originally the contest was entirely adult generated, however the SBP class at Central now runs it almost completely. The students do everything from soliciting prizes and arranging the room to running the contest as greeters, emcees, entertainers and technicians and talking with the media.
The Trivia Contest is held for all seventh grade social studies classes in the Anchorage School District. It is a somewhat large event and the entire process gives the students in the SBP class the opportunity to take leadership roles and learn other workplace skills.
Mock Job Interviews & Job Shadow Opportunities
A variety of ACVB Staff conduct mock job interviews and job shadow opportunities to help prepare students for employment. This is a great experience for our staff and has even resulted in students' employment with ACVB.
Anchorage City of Lights Participation
Each year ACVB and the SBP class at Central Middle School decorate the trees in front of the Historic City Hall building (ACVB Corporate Offices) with white lights. This is part of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce City of Lights program. We always end the “work party” with cookies and hot chocolate in the Log Cabin Visitor Center. We believe working together with the SBP class helps to establish relationships between students and professionals that can build self-esteem for the students and remind the ACVB staff of our responsibility to be involved in the education of Anchorage's students. The City of Lights program gives everyone a chance to support the Anchorage community and light up the streets of Anchorage! |
