Anchorage School District
Carol Comeau, Superintendent

PHILLIPS Alaska believes that by investing in our community, we invest in a strong future for Alaska. Youth and education are the cornerstones of Phillips Alaska's philanthropy. Our support of Anchorage School District School Business Partnership program is one of the highlights of our youth and education strategy.

Our sponsorship of the Anchorage School Business Partnerships is an investment in the potential of Alaska's youth. Anchorage School Business Partnerships coordinates the resources of the Anchorage School District, the Chamber of Commerce, and private industry to help develop this potential.

This sponsorship is not entirely selfless. We are committed to hire qualified Alaskans for available jobs. We are proud to report that 93 percent of our workforce in Alaska is Alaskan. That means that the majority of the 884 employees working for PHILLIPS lists Alaska as a primary residence in their personnel files. That's over 800 employees living, working and volunteering in our community!

Today's youth are tomorrow's workforce. It is our responsibility to prepare them to compete for good jobs in Alaska or any location of their choice. Today's students are tomorrow's business, political and community leaders. The tools they are provided today will determine how they lead us into Alaska's future.

Credit Union 1
Nancy Roman, Personnel, 339-8120

partnered with

Lake Otis Elementary
Marc Robinson,Principal, 277-3536

The partnership between Lake Otis Elementary School and Credit Union 1 is truly something special.

During the past six years they have funded buses, donated school supplies, helped with recycling, donated time, food, clothing, household items and money. They have served food and chaperoned at school events, presented, presided, judged, read, listened and supported, dressed up and dressed down, not only for students but for the entire Lake Otis community.

Their partnership efforts began well before the school year did. They provided volunteers for registration and our Back-to-School picnic in August and they have not stopped yet. Credit Union 1 has been a part of Music Day, the Spelling and Geography Bees, the Science Fair, Dr. Seuss Day, The Holiday Store, the Bicycle Rodeo and 6th grade recognition. However, this partnership has not been one way. Lake Otis students have provided artwork, valentines, advertised the partnership through newsletter and fliers and helped with community clean-up. Additionally, the Lake Otis choir annually provides holiday music for the staff and customers of Credit Union 1.

Credit Union 1 has also been awarded the Dora Maxwell Award, a national award for community service. Congratulations Credit Union 1! Lake Otis Elementary is proud to be partnered with you!

Eagle River Rotary
Lloyd Pool, President, 694-9243

partnered with

Chugiak High School
Jan Christensen, Principal, 742-3050

The Eagle River Rotary and Chugiak High School have had a very positive partnership spanning the past seven and one-half years. One way of saying thank you is through public recognition. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the Eagle River Rotary for all they have done.

Each year members of the Rotary review portfolios that high school seniors have submitted for scholarship review. The organizations selects one senior bound for a four-year institution and one senior who has chosen a vocational, trade or technical institution, and awards each a $1,000 scholarship. The school, the students and the parents have been very appreciative of these awards, totaling over $14,000.

Over the years, Chugiak teachers have relied on the area's business people (many are Rotarians) to conduct mock interviews with students. This type of experience lets the students see what is going to be expected of them when they apply for a job.

These same businesses have graciously allowed students to conduct job shadows to experience the business environment. To be able to do on-site career exploration is a true learning experience for Chugiak students.

Recently the Rotary began a student recognition program within the school. School staff nominates students who have made the most improvement the previous quarter. Each student would receive a certificate, have their name and picture posted at Chugiak High and would gather to have pizza and soda at the recognition ceremony. The first event recognized 24 students! Chugiak looks forward to identifying many more students for this positive recognition.

Chugiak High School is happy to congratulate Eagle River Rotary for receiving a 2002 Star Award. Thanks for everything you do!

Wells Fargo Bank
Nancy Gillies,Vice President, 263-2574

partnered with

East High School
Michael Graham, Principal, 742-2100

In November 1998, East High School and Wells Fargo opened the first and only student-perated and managed bank in Alaska. The bank-a satellite of Wells Fargo- serves East High students and staff members by opening new accounts, accepting deposits and loan payments, cashing checks, providing access to accounts and making change.

Since then, over 20 Wells Fargo (formerly National Bank of Alaska) employees have participated in the Bank Within East School Business Partnership. Over 300 students have been directly involved in t he partnership. The entire student body and East staff continue to benefit from having a bank within the school.

Every semester Wells Fargo employees provide more than 25 hours of training to East students. In addition to presenting information about banking and budgeting, Wells' employees interview 30 students and then provide more detailed technical training for the 15 students selected to work at the Bank Within East. Wells Fargo's commitment does not end when Bank Within East employees are selected and trained. The Bank Within East is open twice a day, five days a week. A Wells Fargo employee is pres-ent every time the bank is open.

This partnership continues to survive and thrive. When East's first phase renovations are complete, the Bank Within East will be housed within the Student Center-Cafeteria. Its prominent location in the school is evidence of the Bank Within East's importance to staff and students and the strength of Wells Fargo-East High School Business Partnership.

Faith Christian Community
Steve Holsinger, Minister, 243-1777

partnered with

Muldoon Elementary
Audrey Chapman, Principal, 742-3250

Faith Christian Community has been a partner with Muldoon Elementary for two years. During this time they have been a constant support to the staff and students of Muldoon Elementary in many ways.

Faith Christian Community continually provides for Muldoon. They have provided for the basic needs of many of our students by purchasing winter coats and boots for those who need them. They have provided over 40 children with gifts during the Christmas season. They give of their time and energy to support various school functions, such as volunteering during the Fall Carnival to run games and activities for the children.

They support educational goals such as providing a school-wide puppet show during Red Ribbon Week on the dangers of alcohol. They support Muldoon Elementary parents by providing free child care during PTA meetings. School staff is provided a weekly meeting time to share concerns and seek moral support for issues and areas of concern. Faith Christian Community supports staff and students by providing endless "surprises," from popcorn for students to lunch for the staff, to boost morale and send the message they are valued.

Faith Christian Community is an ever-available support to Muldoon Elementary. When discussing the give-and-take nature of a partnership and questioning what indeed Muldoon Elementary could possibly give back, the answer came in the form of "oppor t unity." The opportunity to share in a spirit of kindness and spread an attitude of supportive caring throughout both communities. By welcoming the efforts of Faith Christian Community's members on behalf of our school, and by sharing our heartfelt thanks for these efforts, we hope in some small way to return the tremendous support received from Faith Christian Community.
