Free Books

Help yourself to Preview tiles whenever you can visit ASD Ed Center and take books back to your library.

The Preview program at Library Resources is arranged so the ASD librarians can examine and write a review on new materials from a wide variety of publishing houses.

When preview books arrive they are placed on the Preview shelf at Library Resources. Librarians may select from fiction, picture books, nonfiction, graphic novels, and biographies that publishers send with the expectation a review will be posted in Open World Cat.

Librarians are also asked to enter reviews into LS2 PAC. Under the Borrower Reviews tab click on Add Review and log on. Staff members pin is the last 3 digits of their Borrower ID. LS2 PAC requires a title for your review that is between 10 and 40 characters long. You must also select a rating for the book. They use stars for rating, one star being poor and five stars being excellent. When you have finished writing your review, please add your first name and submit the review. In order to successfully submit a review all fields must be complete including the star rating. Failure to complete all fields will result in an error message. Once you click submit you will not be able to edit your review.

Publishing houses are very interested in your reviews. Detailed instructions on how to enter reviews in Open World Cat start on page 2.

Content guidelines for reviews:

The recommended length for a review is 75 to 300 words. You are allotted up to 10,000 characters. The best reviews include not only whether you liked or disliked something, but also why. Feel free to mention other items that you consider similar and how this item rates in comparison to them. Below are some tips to assist with writing your review:

  • Focus your review on the item
  • Be clear and concise
  • Describe your personal experience on whether you liked or disliked the item and why
  • Provide other readers with a taste of the plot, so they can gather enough information to see if they would like the item. However, do not give away surprises, especially the ending of a story!
  • Do not use offensive language or profanity
  • Do not add contact information
  • Do not include html, javascript, css, or images

MARC records for preview books are added as time permits. If a record is in the ASD catalog for the book(s) you selected, you can just add your barcode and circulate the book immediately. If no record is in LS2 Staff, you will need to send in a First Search record to LR_Process@asdk12.org.

We need your sincere commitment to this program in submitting reviews. Your participation is important to make it work. We are able to add hundreds of new titles a year to the ASD library collection with your participation.
