Citizen teams to unveil budget cut recommendations
Citizen review teams will present their budget-cutting recommendations to Anchorage School District Superintendent Carol Comeau and Anchorage School Board members tonight at the new Dimond High School. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the auditeria.
The citizens were tasked with developing recommendations to address a projected $26 million budget shortfall for the 2004-2005 school year, equal to a 7 percent reduction in the district’s general fund budget. The projected shortfall is caused by state education cuts, increased district contribution to state retirement systems, inflation of supply and utility costs, additional programs and services created to meet federal and state education mandates, and increased costs for union contracts.
In September, nearly 150 citizens volunteered to spend six weeks scrutinizing the district’s budget and looking for reductions, efficiencies, and revenue enhancements. The citizens were divided into four teams: Instruction, Instructional Support, General Administration, Support Services.
Comeau will use the citizen team recommendations to help create a balanced budget proposal to bring before the school board in January.
Tonight’s presentation will be taped for broadcast on ASD TV Ch 14. The budget review team recommendations will be posted on the ASD Web site, www.asdk12.org/depts/budget/brt.
